Valve has paid out $57 million so far

To date, some 1,500 users have earned a collective $57 million from Valve for creating custom in-game content for titles likeTeam Fortress 2,Dota 2, andCounter-Strike: Global Offensive. Up until now, only the company’s titles have supported this kind of payout, but that’s changing.

Chivalry: Medieval WarfareandDungeon Defenders Eternityare the first third-party games to have “revenue-generating” curated Workshops. It’s taken Valve this long to face “the sheer number of challenges required in order to scale to a global audience of creators and players.”

Two down, countless more to go. Valve expects additional Workshops to roll out paid support for creators in the “coming weeks and months.” For now, it’s launching improved tools “that enable contributors to view real-time sales data for their items as well as view detailed per-item revenue breakdowns and historical statements.” Hop to it!
