If Sergio Leone had directed a movie based onZelda… it probably wouldn’t look anything like this, actually. It’s a lot closer to the cheese that Takashi Miike’sSukiyaki Western Djangooozes out. Still, a western that borrows elements from theZeldaseries is novel enough to watch at least once.
Fistful of Rupeesis a three-part miniseries directed byNathan Kitada and Aaron Umetani. Characters are slightly tweaked to better fit the more grounded, non-magical atmosphere. For example, Colonel Ganon, played by musicianRawn, is the leader of gang of bandits calling themselves “Moblins,” while Zelda, played by actress-turned-games journalistLisa Foiles, is a school teacher who moonlights as the mysterious lawman Sheik.
Link has been redesigned as a nameless Native American survivor of Ganon’s raid on his village, butTJ Smithis obviously way too white to be playing him. At the very least, he has been kept mute, a trait that just about every other live-actionZeldafilm seems to disregard. Kudos for that!
