Like a Dragon: Yakuza in Hawaiiwill get a New Game Plus mode as free post-launch content, Sega confirmed during the recentRGG Like a Dragon Direct. The decision was likely made to avoid last year’s Infinite Wealth debacle when the mode was locked behind a paid DLC.
Sega is no doubt aware of the bitter feelings surrounding the decision. The company announced the news at the tail end of the LAD Direct video as a “one last thing” surprise. Sega hasn’t confirmed when the mode will arrive, mind.Yakuza in Hawaiiwill sail the salty seas on Jul 22, 2025, so the mode should (hopefully) arrive soon after.
For those unaware, the last mainline entry didn’t include New Game Plus as part of the package. To play the mode inLike a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, players had to shell out 20 bones for the Master Vacation Bundle DLC. Yes, it includes some neat outfits and a new dungeon to explore, but it’s also the only way fans can experience New Game Plus, and $20 is a good chunk of change for a mode that’s been a part of the series for ages. At the time of writing, the DLC holds a hard “Very Negative” reviewon Steam.
It seems Sega wants to sidestep that particular shark tank by offering the mode for free once again. Hopefully, it won’t take long forYakuza in Hawaiiowners to get their premium high-sails adventure underway.
Sail the sillier seas in Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza
The mode announcement wasn’t the only noteworthy thing from the direct. Players got a deep dive look atYakuza in Hawaii‘s wacky, spastic gameplay. The video showcased protagonist Majima as he tore up the streets of Honolulu before hunting pirates in the Pacific.
Developer Ryu Ga Gotoku seems to be pulling out the stops for this one. Ship combat looks inspired by games likeAssassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, but faster and more arcadey. Of course, it comes with that classicLike a Dragoncharm: you can deck your ship in hot pink paint and cute hearts if you want. Regular combat sees you occasionally facing dozens of enemies, which you tackle using wide-range attacks and a chain hook. Abilities include summons, such as using an electric guitar to call forth a “sadistic ape” to fight your foes.
There are also bonus outfits. So long as you’re okay with pre-ordering games, you can dress Majima as Ichiban in his Hawaii or Japan outfits. Signing up for Sega emails rewards you with Kiryu’s classic gray-and-crimson drip. But you’ll have to vie for the Deluxe Edition if you want the man behind the look to join your crew.
Overall, the game is looking exciting.Like a Dragon: Yakuza in Hawaiilaunches for PC via Steam, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S on February 21.
