Cuphead could be this year’s big run-and-gun game

It has skyrocketed to the top of my radar, at least That’s my hope, anyway.Cupheadis one of those games I feel bad for not noticing sooner. Sporting a remarkable sense of style and animation, this looks to represent the best of the run-and-gun genre, with developer Studio MDHR citing influences likeGunstar Heroes,Contra Hard Corps, and the Mad Hatter boss fight inBatman & Robin. These people know their stuff. “WithCuphead, we aim to evolve the genre by adding new features such as: super arts, infinite lives, a playable world map and hidden secrets,” writes the team....

Diablo III on consoles won’t have Auction House, or DRM

But is it too late for Blizzard? As someone who played a metric ton ofDiablo IIIat launch, I made my way to the PAX booth pretty quickly to ask some questions about the console port. The first thing I wanted to find out is the existence of the Real Money Auction House — a question that was answered with a resounding “no,” confirmed by a Blizzard representative. Additionally, there will be less loot drops for uncommon items so items don’t clutter the screen....

E3 08: Rock Band merch that doesn’t really involve rocking out at all

Before I go any further, know that I have playedRock Band 2and it is — as expected — the sequel toRock Band. That is to say that as anunashamedRock Band fanboy (I play once a day, minimum), I wouldn’t have taken much (although there is, indeed, much). But I’m not here to talk about the game (that’ll come later). As I’ve already admitted to being a snorting, mouth-breathingRock Bandnerd, I geeked out equally over some of the personalizedRock Bandmerchandise Harmonix are going to allow players to spend their cash on....

EA lays off four percent of its employees

To ‘address our challenges’ Electronic Arts has laid off a substantial number of employees, reducing its total workforce by four percent. For the 9,000-employee publishing giant, this amounts to approximately 350 people who are left without jobs. This follows a particularly “difficult quarter” whereEA saysit “did not perform to [its] expectations.” According toKotaku, it’s mostly the marketing, publishing, operations, and analytics departments that are affected. People in marketing have reportedly expected something along these lines for a while now, as EA had placed a freeze on hiring and travel months ago....

Emily is Away’s AOL-style chat hits eerily close to home

It’s like a game about my life The tagline forEmily is Awayis what got me to try it out. “Relive your awkward teenage years.” Sure, that sounds like a blast. It’s a short text adventure set in the early 2000s and made to look like AOL Instant Messenger. (Yes, that was my real AIM screen name in the header image.) What struck me immediately was how closely the dates mirrored my life experience....
