A Japanese government agency investigating claims thatPlayStation Vitaunits are burning up while being charged. Sony admits 31 cases of this happening, though the manufacturer has claimed that such incidents are the fault of improper user behavior.

The National Institute of Technology and Evaluation received Sony’s findings on July 12, with the problem identified as affecting the slot between the Vita and the charging unit. Nobody has been hurt as a result of the incidents — 23 of which have been in Japan, with the rest occurring in America, Britain, and Australia.

Sony’s not stumping up the cash to fix any of these burned units, claiming that users must have had liquids in the connection at the time. The bottom line message is that if you’ve burnt your Vita, it’s your fault, though the investigation is ongoing.

Just a reminder, though — You cannot utilize your PS Vita to store Dr. Pepper, no matter how desperate you are to find uses for it.
