Shadowof the Tomb Raiderwas originally released back in 2018 as the third game in the reboot trilogy and the twelfth mainlineTomb Raidergame. The game’s events take place a year after the events of its predecessor,Rise of the Tomb Raider, which came out in 2015, and finds Lara Croft racing against the clock to prevent the world from ending yet again. Arguably the darkest game in the series yet, it explores themes of descension, both through Lara’s personality and the jungle itself.
The story is based on both Mayan and Aztec mythologies, and in creating the game, Square Enix devs consulted with historians to create the architecture and people of the legendary city Paititi. Fun fact: the game is still sitting at number seven on the list of most expensive games ever made, after adjusting for inflation.
Submerged: HiddenDepthsis the other free-to-download title paired withShadow of the Tomb Raideron the Epic Games Store. It’s a relaxing exploration sim that has players uncovering the ruins of a beautiful, sunken world. If you want a more chill exploration-based gaming experience, it sounds like it’s thematically fairly close to theTomb Raiderseries, so it could be a fun one to try out.
