Demon dungeoneer racks up over 800,000 sales

It was a very, very long wait, but it seems that it all paid off in the end. Publishers Atlus and Sega announced thatShin Megami Tensei V— which launched on Nintendo Switch in November 2021 — has already bagged itself a meaty 800,000 sales since release, officially becoming the best-selling title in the stylish and melodramatic dungeon-crawling franchise.

It has takenSMT Vless than two months to surpass the lifetime sales of its predecessor,Shin Megami Tensei IV,which launched on Nintendo 3DS way back in 2013. The holiday season, long wait, and huge installation base of Nintendo Switch hardware all helped this milestone come to pass… Not to mention, of course, thatSMT Vis also an excellent release, heavily lauded by both critics and the community.

As featured in theSega Sammy Management Meeting 2021, a report released in December 2021 to retroactively review Sega’s previous 12 months, Sega officials wrote that they were pleased withSMT V‘s success, noting that the sale status of the dungeon crawling anime adventure was “quite good”. So there you have it. Almost a million copies of a niche series sold in less than two months officially counts as “quite good”.

For now,Shin Megami Tensei Vremains a Nintendo Switch exclusive, so one can only imagine how much these sales figures would increase should the title be ported to PC or other console platforms in the future. Then again, perhaps the excitement of hitting the multi-million sales mark might be too much for Sega, which would have to raise the sales status meter to an unheard of “very good”.
