13.81 million Smashing it on Switch
Smash Ultimateis a triumph by any measure. It’s currently tied as the highest-rated game in the series withBrawlon Metacritic, it’s loved by fans, and of course, has sold a ton. How much is a ton? A lot. Let’s break it down.
In just over four months, in what is to be a longer run,Super Smash Bros. Ultimatehas sold 13.81 million copies, making it the third highest-selling Switch game to date, behindMario Kart 8andMario Odyssey. To put things into perspectiveSmash Ultimatenearly did in four months whatOdysseyhas done in a year and a half, and is approaching whatMario Kart 8has done in two years time. Oh, and it also outsold the Wii U, like, the entire system. In its lifetime the Wii U was clocked at 13.56 million units, which is just underSmash Ultimate‘s 13.81 million.
Nintendo has also updated its top five worldwide seller list, withPokemon: Let’s Gocracking it with 10.63 million in fifth place.Zelda: Breath of the Wildis in fourth with 12.77 million (just on Switch: it gets murkier when you add Wii U sales into the mix). Going further up the ladder in third place is aforementionedSmash Ultimate, just below 14.44 million fromOdysseyand 16.69 million fromMario Kart 8.
GivenSmash‘s momentum, it could easily end up at the top of the list. But don’t forget: a new mainlinePokemonis on the way.
